Oregano - usually known as the pizza and tomato sauce herb - has many other uses as well. Not only do many Italian & Mexican recipes call for it, it can also be an attractive addition to the herb garden and dried bouquets and swags.

No moussaka recipe should be without Greek oregano! This fast-growing variety will quickly fill your garden with its dark green, fragrant leaves. Like other oreganos, our Greek oregano likes well-drained soil and water during dry spells. Clip these fragrant leaves straight from the garden to season fish, meats, salads, sauces, and stews. You can plant this useful herb outdoors in the Autumn or Spring.

A staple in Italian cooking, this oregano belongs in every kitchen garden. Its round, soft, green leaves can be used either fresh or dried. The plants are vigorous, and once established, will slowly carpet an area with foliage. In midsummer, they produce greenish red flower stalks that are particularly attractive to bees and other pollinators. Historically, oregano has had healing uses in areas such as: digestion, antiseptic, respiration, and menstruation.

Herrenhausen Oregano, Kent Beauty Oregano, Hopley's Purple Oregano


Although each of these carry a mild oregano scent, they are usually grown as ornamentals. The Heerenhausen and Hopley's produce lots of mauve-purple flowers, which can be used in dried flower arrangements and swags. The Kent's Beauty is a low-growing, groundcover-type plant. All are hardy to at least Zone 4. One each of: Heerenhausen, Hopley's Purple & Kent's Beauty.
