How sweet it is! This herb, known as sweet herb of Paraguay, has been used as a sweetener since 1887 and is very popular in Japan. Reported to be 200 to 300 times sweeter than sugar and calorie free, just two leaves added to a cup of tea will sweeten it. In the U.S. its sale as a sweetener is "forbidden" though it can be found as a dietary food supplement in various forms. Native to South America, where it has been used for thousands of years. In North America, will only grow as a perennial in the southern states, and elsewhere must be grown as an annual. We think you'll enjoy growing your own plant in the garden just for fun. | | | Kitchen garden Description Page |

Tender perennial in zones 8-10; acts as an annual in colder climates. A common ingredient in Thai cuisine, Lemon Grass produces tall clumps (often growing as tall as 5 feet) of lemon flavored foliage. All parts of the plant are useable, but the most flavorful part of the plant is the lower few inches of each leaf blade. This is a tender perennial that grows best in tropical parts of the United States. In other climates, grow it in large tubs or planters and move it indoors for the winter.
