By "ornamental" we mean that the primary current usage in America is purely decorative, although some of these have a long history of medicinal or culinary usage. Soapwort, for instance, is now grown for its pretty pink flowers, but my own grandmother used to harvest these plants (on the western Nebraska prairie)and pound them on rocks to produce a mushy substance she addded to the soap she made in the back yard.

The handsome, dark green, straplike leaves of Society garlic emit a strong garlic fragrance. The plants form dense clumps that grow larger every year. It's an excellent ornamental that shoots up large, round, pinkish-blue flowers during the summer. In northern climates it requires a thick mulch to survive the winter. Or, grow it in pots and move it indoors before hard frost in the fall. This is a hard-to-find plant with many extraordinary qualities. Shipped in a 3.5" x 4" pot.

Variegated Society garlic has all the qualities of standard Society Garlic, except its straplike leaves are dark green with a yellow stripe down the center. 9278.Dittany of Crete$4.75  


One of our favorite oreganos, Dittany of Crete, forms a low mound with 1-inch wide leaves that are covered with soft white hairs. (It is strictly an ornamental oregano; with it's very fuzzy leaves, it would probably feel as though you were eating a cotton swab!) Later in the season the plant develops greenish, hoplike bracts with pink, pendulous flowers. The plant is extremely ornamental in hanging baskets or window boxes where its hanging flowers can be admired.

Tender perennial in zones 8-10; acts as an annual in colder climates. A more compact version of standard myrtle, the Dwarf myrtle mirrors its larger cousin with dark green leaves and small, white fragrant flowers. Easily trained to any shape, Dwarf myrtle is used frequently for topiaries. It requires full sun, well drained soil and should never be allowed to dry out completely.
