Thymes. There are dozens of different thymes grown in the U.S. Here are some of the most popular and useful varieties.

9279.French Thyme$4.95  


French thyme is a close cousin to English thyme, but has grayer, slightly more pungent foliage. It's an excellent culinary thyme that should be included in every herb garden plan. (Dotwells) French thyme is less vigorous than English thyme. Can be planted outdoors in the Autumn in Zones 6-10.

All you need to do is rub your hands gently over the leaves of Lemon thyme to be rewarded with their fresh lemon scent. This vigorous, low-growing herb makes an excellent edging or container plant. Pinewood thyme is probably one of the more unusual thymes you can grow. Its tiny leaves are packed so close together on the stem that they almost look like miniature pine trees. Pinewood thyme makes a wonderful container plant. Can be planted outdoors in the Autumn in Zones 6-10.

9287.Caraway Thyme$4.75  


Scented like Caraway seed, Caraway is one of the few thyme ground covers to have a fragrance. It has deep green leaves that are set about a half inch apart along reddish stems. Caraway Thyme is suitable for planting where it won't be a problem that it grows aggressively. It is not suitable for small spaces like between flagstones. It blooms mid spring and is nice when planted with a later blooming thyme like Coconut Thyme. Caraway Thyme can be used as a substitute for real Caraway in any recipe. It is especially nice in bread or cooked with meat. The species name herba-barona translates herb of beef.

An ornamental rather than a culinary thyme, Woolly thyme forms dense mats of slightly hairy, silver foliage. The plants rarely grow over two inches tall and work well planted between the cracks in stone walls or walkways. Can be planted outdoors in the Autumn in Zones 6-10. .
