Catnips & calamint Plant Descriptions

9846 Common catnip Nepeta cataria Catnip, Common This is the one that cats love, and it is usefull as a mild sedative when taken as a tea. Hardy perennial to at least Zone 4, but if you have cats, you will need to protect it until it gets established or your feline friends will dig it up. Grows to 3'-4' with soft, grey green foliage. P 3ft H, O, T A fast growing mint with coarsely toothed, grey-green leaves and white or purple flowers. Your cat will love you for planting this in your garden, and you will enjoy the entertainment when your cat goes wacko! Don't worry if your cat destroys the whole patch, it will grow back fast. On humans, catnip has almost the opposite effect; it makes a great sedative tea, and has also been used for detoxifying, stimulating the appatite, digestion, and as a diruetic.

9848 Lemon Catnip Nepeta cataria citriodora Catnip, Lemon You will sometimes see this as a separate species, but it is actually a subspecies of the common catnip, and cats are just as attracted to this one. Plants are a bit smaller than common catnip and the foliage is a soft green rather than grey/green. Lemon scent is particularly noticeable on hot days. A nice addition to any tea. Honeybees love it.
